Hurts so-so, Tagovailoa misses Tide game

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts threw an easy interception into the hands of cornerback Trevon Diggs to put an end to the first-team offense's final drive of the annual A-Day spring game.

It was that kind of scrimmage for Hurts and his White team. Hurts completed 19 of 37 pass attempts for 195 yards and that one interception. More importantly, his offense was kept out of the end zone the entire game.

"I was not disappointed in the way (Hurts) played," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "I think we have got some guys that can rush a little bit, and even though we were rushing four guys most of the time, there was way too much pressure in the pocket for the quarterback to be able to operate like we would like."

Nebraska spring game a Frost lovefest

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) As always, Nebraska fans showed up in big numbers for the spring game.

The vibe was different this time.

Dual-threat QB Fields debuts for Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) A crowd of more than 82,000 cheered when Justin Fields jogged onto the field for the first time at Sanford Stadium at Georgia's G-Day spring game on Saturday.

There were more reasons in the scrimmage to cheer for the freshman dual-threat quarterback who was the biggest name in Georgia's top-ranked signing class .

Notre Dame defense improving under Lea

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Defense is supposed to be one of the strengths of Notre Dame's 2018, with 10 returning starters.

So despite surrendering 913 yards on 123 plays in Saturday's spring game, Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly showed little concern with the progress on that side of the ball.

McSorley says PSU offense will roll on

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Trace McSorley holds numerous Penn State passing records and will have more chances to add to his legacy with co-stars Saquon Barkley and Mike Gesicki gone.

But finding go-to teammates that can replace Barkley's and Gesicki's production - nearly 40 percent of the offense since 2015 - didn't top McSorley's priority list during spring practice. Instead, he spent the last month reminding his teammates on the offensive side of the ball that they still have plenty to prove.

Kelly pleased with UCLA's progress

LOS ANGELES (AP) UCLA did not fly up and down the Drake Stadium field like a flock of Ducks on Saturday.

The Bruins showed little of the high-adrenaline fury expected from a Chip Kelly-coached team in the first spring showcase of his tenure in Westwood.

QBs on display at Oregon's spring game

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) With Justin Herbert already set as Oregon's starting quarterback, some of the focus at the Ducks' spring game was on other positions.

Like his backup. And his receivers.

Vols QB Guarantano stars in spring game

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano has made it clear he's the best quarterback currently on the Volunteers' roster.

That doesn't necessarily mean he will maintain that status by the start of the season.

QBs Delton, Thompson shine in KSU game

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) Kansas State coach Bill Snyder wanted to see his offense operating at a tidy clip when his team split into purple and white squads for its spring game.

The 78-year-old coach got what he was looking for in a showdown between quarterbacks Alex Delton and Skylar Thompson on a rainy Saturday, with the purple squad winning 31-28.

Ex-Ohio State coach Bruce dies at 87

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Earle Bruce stepped into his dream job, football coach at Ohio State, under most challenging circumstances, replacing the program's revered longtime leader after a fall from grace.

Bruce embraced the task of following Woody Hayes, and went on to have his own Hall of Fame career. He never did quite match Hayes' record or status at Ohio State, but Bruce earned a special place of his own in Buckeyes football history as adored patriarch and sage and the mentor to the program's current coaching star.
