Rangers top Predators to end 5-game skid

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Rangers can finally breathe a sigh of relief after holding off the Nashville Predators for just their second win of the season.

Kevin Hayes scored the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist while Jimmy Vesey collected his first two points of the season to help the Rangers snap a five-game skid with a 4-2 win over the Predators on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Kreider added a power-play goal and David Desharnais extended his point streak to four games as the Rangers have now collected points in three straight games.

Flyers top Oilers on Simmonds' late goal

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Wayne Simmonds scored on a feed from Valtteri Filppula with 2:15 left to break a tie and lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the slumping Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Filppula skated into the slot and found Flippula to his right, who one-timed a shot past Cam Talbot to give the Flyers three wins in four games.

Ovechkin's 10th gets Caps by Wings in OT

DETROIT (AP) Alex Ovechkin's first significant play of the night led to a goal for the other team. His pass was intercepted, and Detroit scored short-handed.

Ovechkin and the Washington power play would eventually make up for that mistake.

Pens edge Panthers on Sheary's late goal

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) The Pittsburgh Penguins needed a little time to get up to speed against the Florida Panthers.

Conor Sheary scored a power-play goal with 2:53 left to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory Friday night.

Wheeler scores 200th, Maurice wins 600th

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice and captain Blake Wheeler shrugged off their milestones.

Wheeler scored the 200th goal of his NHL career with 6:46 left and the Jets held off the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on Friday night for Maurice's 600th victory.

Grant, Gibson spark Ducks' rout of Habs

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Derek Grant didn't score a goal in the first 92 games of his NHL career, and then he put two past star Montreal goalie Carey Price.

That was only perhaps the fifth-strangest occurrence in the Anaheim Ducks' 6-2 victory over the struggling Canadiens on Friday night.

Jones stops 28 as Sharks blank Devils

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) After a mediocre start at home, Martin Jones and the San Jose Sharks turned in a solid performance in their first road game.

Jones made 28 saves for his first shutout of the season and 16th overall in the Sharks' 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.

Detroit, Athanasiou agree on 1-year deal

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Red Wings have agreed in principle to a one-year, $1,387,500 deal with forward Andreas Athanasiou.

General manager Ken Holland said before the team's game against Washington on Friday night that the 23-year-old Athanasiou needed to travel back from Europe and go through the immigration process, and that he still needed to pass a physical.

Devils G Schneider placed on IR

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) The New Jersey Devils placed goalie Cory Schneider on injured reserve with a lower-body injury suffered Thursday night in a 5-4 overtime victory at Ottawa.

Schneider left after the second period. Keith Kinkaid replaced him and stopped all nine shots he faced to earn the victory.

Dorsett's 2 goals lift Canucks by Sabres

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) The Vancouver Canucks bounced back on the second night of a back-to-back.

Derek Dorsett had two goals and an assist in the Canucks' 4-2 comeback victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.
